How to Configure a Thread Border Router

Establish a stable smart home network by configuring Thread border routers. Follow these steps to connect your Matter-enabled devices.

  1. Verify Thread-compatible hardware. Ensure your intended Border Router is a Thread-certified device such as a HomePod, Apple TV 4K (Ethernet model), or a dedicated smart home hub. Confirm the device is powered on and connected to the same local network as your mobile control device.
  2. Prepare the Home app. Open the Home app on your iPhone or iPad. Ensure you are signed in with the same iCloud account intended for managing your smart home accessories to maintain network consistency.
  3. Add the Border Router. Tap the plus (+) icon in the top right corner of the Home app and select Add Accessory. Scan the setup code located on your Border Router device or enter the eight-digit code manually.
  4. Assign the device to a room. Follow the on-screen prompts to name your Border Router and assign it to a specific room within the Home app. This organizational step helps the controller manage mesh routing paths more efficiently.
  5. Pair Thread-enabled accessories. Initiate the pairing process for your Thread-capable smart accessory (such as a light bulb or sensor). The Border Router will automatically detect the device and negotiate a connection over the Thread network instead of Bluetooth or Wi-Fi.
  6. Confirm connection status. Navigate to the accessory settings in the Home app. Under the Status section, check that the connection type lists Thread. If the connection type is absent or shows Bluetooth, power cycle the accessory to force a renegotiation with the Border Router.
