How to Secure Your Smart Home Network
Protect your smart home network from unauthorized access with essential router configurations, device isolation, and encryption standards.
- Update router firmware. Log in to your router’s administrative interface through a web browser using the default gateway IP address. Navigate to the System or Maintenance tab and select Firmware Update to ensure you are running the latest security patches provided by the manufacturer.
- Enable WPA3 encryption. Access your Wireless Settings menu and locate the security protocol selection. Change the encryption standard from WPA2 to WPA3-Personal to utilize superior password-based authentication and forward secrecy for your connected devices.
- Create a dedicated IoT network. Navigate to the Guest Network or VLAN settings in your router interface. Create a secondary Wi-Fi network specifically for your smart home devices to keep them isolated from your primary devices containing sensitive data like laptops and smartphones.
- Disable remote administration. In your router's Advanced settings, locate Remote Management or Web Access from WAN. Disable this feature to ensure your router settings cannot be accessed from outside your local network.
- Disable WPS. Locate the Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) toggle within your router's wireless security menu. Disable WPS immediately to eliminate the vulnerability that allows attackers to bypass password authentication via brute-force PIN attacks.
