How to Install a Wired Security Camera
Learn the precise steps to mount, power, and connect a wired security camera for reliable smart home surveillance and constant monitoring.
- Determine the camera placement. Select a mounting location that offers a clear, unobstructed field of view. Ensure the mounting surface is solid and accessible for cable routing, keeping in mind the camera's ideal height is 8 to 10 feet to balance coverage and tamper resistance.
- Mark and drill mounting holes. Use the provided template to mark the screw holes on the mounting surface. Drill pilot holes to prevent splitting the material, then drill a larger central hole to accommodate the Ethernet or power cabling.
- Run the cable to the access point. Feed your Ethernet cable from the mounting location through the wall or along the soffit to your network switch or NVR. Use fish tape to pull cabling through tight spaces inside wall cavities.
- Terminate and attach the camera. Connect the cable to the camera pigtail, ensuring the connection is protected inside the mounting base or a waterproof junction box. Secure the camera body to the mounting bracket using the included screws.
- Power on and configure the system. Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to your PoE switch or NVR. Launch the camera's management software or mobile application to detect the new hardware and complete the initial setup.
