How to Reset and Reconfigure Guest Access for Smart Home Devices

Restore control over your smart home guest permissions. Follow these steps to audit user access, reset invite tokens, and secure your network connections.

  1. Revoke existing guest permissions. Open your primary smart home application (Apple Home, Google Home, or Amazon Alexa). Navigate to the Settings or Home Members menu, select the guest account currently experiencing issues, and choose Remove Member or Revoke Access to clear the corrupt token.
  2. Clear local cache on guest device. On the guest device, uninstall the smart home application. Navigate to Settings > General > iPhone Storage or Settings > Apps to ensure no residual preference files remain before reinstalling the latest version from the App Store or Google Play Store.
  3. Power cycle the smart home hub. Physically disconnect the smart home hub or bridge from its power source. Wait 30 seconds to allow the volatile memory to clear, then reconnect the power. Wait for the status light to return to a steady operational state.
  4. Generate a fresh invitation link. In your hub's admin app, navigate to Home Settings > Invite People. Select the specific devices or rooms you wish to grant access to and generate a new invitation link or QR code. Avoid reusing old, expired links.
  5. Verify guest authentication. Have the guest open the invite link on their device while connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the hub. Follow the on-screen prompts to authenticate their account, ensuring they grant the app necessary permissions for Local Network access in their device settings.
