How to Configure and Manage VPN Settings on macOS
Secure your network traffic on macOS by manually configuring VPN settings. Learn the proper protocol selection and security best practices for Apple devices.
- Access Network settings. Open the Apple menu and select System Settings. Navigate to the Network tab in the sidebar and locate the VPN & Filters section.
- Add a new VPN configuration. Click the Add VPN Configuration button. Select the appropriate protocol based on your requirements, such as IKEv2, IPsec, or L2TP over IPsec. macOS native support prefers IKEv2 for superior security and stability.
- Enter server credentials. Fill in the Display Name, Server Address, and Remote ID fields provided by your network administrator. Ensure the Account Name and password or certificate fields are populated accurately.
- Refine connection options. Click the Options button to configure advanced settings like Send all traffic over VPN connection. Enabling this forces all internet traffic through the encrypted tunnel, preventing leaks.
- Establish the connection. Toggle the switch next to your newly created VPN profile to connect. The status will update to Connected once the handshake is successful.
- Test for connection leaks. Visit an IP leak testing service in your browser to confirm your public IP address reflects the VPN server location. If your actual ISP IP appears, disconnect immediately and review your tunnel configuration.
