How to Use Activity Monitor on Mac

Learn to monitor CPU, memory, energy, disk, and network usage on Mac with Activity Monitor. Track processes and optimize performance effectively.

  1. Open Activity Monitor. Press Command + Space to open Spotlight search, type 'Activity Monitor' and press Enter. Alternatively, open Finder, navigate to Applications > Utilities, then double-click Activity Monitor.
  2. Navigate the five monitoring tabs. Click between CPU, Memory, Energy, Disk, and Network tabs at the top of the window. Each tab displays different system metrics and running processes consuming those resources.
  3. Monitor CPU usage. In the CPU tab, view processes sorted by CPU consumption. The bottom panel shows overall system load, user processes, and idle percentage. High CPU usage indicates intensive processing tasks.
  4. Check memory consumption. Switch to the Memory tab to see RAM usage per process. The Memory Pressure graph at bottom shows green (good), yellow (moderate), or red (critical) memory availability. Watch for apps using excessive memory.
  5. Track energy impact. Use the Energy tab to monitor battery drain on MacBooks or power consumption on desktop Macs. Apps with high energy impact reduce battery life significantly.
  6. Monitor disk and network activity. Check the Disk tab for read/write operations and the Network tab for data sent/received. These tabs help diagnose slow performance caused by excessive disk access or network transfers.
  7. Force quit unresponsive applications. Select a problematic process and click the X button in the toolbar, then click Force Quit. Use this only when applications become unresponsive or consume excessive resources.
