How to Enable Time Machine on macOS

Configure automatic backups on your Mac using Time Machine. Protect your data with these precise steps for macOS Sequoia and Sonoma.

  1. Connect the storage device. Plug your external drive into an available port on your Mac. If the drive requires a separate power source, ensure it is connected to a wall outlet before proceeding.
  2. Open System Settings. Click the Apple Menu in the top-left corner of your screen and select System Settings. Navigate to the General tab in the left-hand sidebar.
  3. Access Time Machine settings. Select Time Machine from the list of options in the General menu. Click the Add Backup Disk button, represented by a plus (+) icon.
  4. Select and encrypt the drive. Choose your connected external drive from the list of available disks. If you wish to protect your backups, toggle on Encrypt Backup and provide a secure password.
  5. Confirm setup. Click Done to finalize the configuration. Time Machine will immediately prepare the disk and initiate the first backup cycle automatically.
