How to Protect Browser Passwords on Mac

Secure your web credentials on macOS by enabling Touch ID authentication and removing vulnerable password storage methods. Ensure maximum browser security.

  1. Require Touch ID for Safari AutoFill. Open Safari and select Settings from the menu bar. Navigate to the AutoFill tab and ensure that 'Usernames and passwords' is checked. Verify that 'Require Touch ID or password to fill passwords' is enabled in the Safari Settings security preferences.
  2. Enable Biometric Unlock in Google Chrome. Launch Google Chrome and click the three-dot menu icon in the top right corner. Select Settings, then navigate to 'Autofill and passwords' and select 'Google Password Manager'. Click Settings in the sidebar and toggle on 'Use Windows Hello' (labeled 'Use biometrics' on macOS) to ensure your identity is verified before viewing stored credentials.
  3. Remove Unprotected Passwords. Review your browser's password manager for entries that lack strong, unique passwords. Delete any credentials associated with dormant accounts or sites that do not support modern security standards. Consolidate your security posture by keeping only essential, active logins.
  4. Disable Browser Password Saving. For maximum security, disable built-in browser password saving entirely if you use a dedicated third-party password manager. In Safari, uncheck 'Usernames and passwords' under the AutoFill tab. In Chrome, disable 'Offer to save passwords' within the Password Manager settings.
  5. Secure Your Local Mac Account. Browser security is only as strong as your Mac login. Navigate to System Settings, click 'Lock Screen', and set 'Require password after screen saver begins or display is turned off' to 'Immediately'. This ensures your browser data is shielded as soon as you step away from the keyboard.
