How to Free Up Storage Space on Mac

Clear storage space on your Mac with these proven methods. Remove unnecessary files, optimize storage settings, and reclaim gigabytes of disk space.

  1. Check your current storage usage. Click the Apple menu > About This Mac > More Info > Storage Settings. Review the storage breakdown to identify which categories consume the most space. Look for large files in Documents, Downloads, or Applications that you can target first.
  2. Empty the Trash completely. Right-click the Trash in your Dock and select 'Empty Trash'. For a more thorough cleanup, hold Option while clicking 'Empty Trash' to bypass the confirmation dialog. Check if you have separate trash folders for Mail, Photos, or other applications that also need emptying.
  3. Clear Downloads and Desktop folders. Open Finder and navigate to Downloads. Delete files you no longer need, especially large installers, disk images (.dmg files), and old archives. Move to Desktop and organize or delete accumulated files. Both locations often contain forgotten files taking up substantial space.
  4. Use Storage Recommendations. In Storage Settings, click 'Recommendations' to access built-in cleanup tools. Enable 'Store in iCloud' to move Desktop and Documents to cloud storage. Use 'Optimize Storage' for Photos and 'Reduce Clutter' to find large files and old downloads automatically.
  5. Clear system caches and temporary files. Open Finder, press Command+Shift+G, and type ~/Library/Caches. Delete contents of cache folders, especially those from browsers and applications you use frequently. Navigate to /System/Library/Caches and clear system-level caches if you have administrator access.
  6. Remove large and unused applications. Open Applications folder and review installed software. Drag unused applications to Trash, focusing on games, old creative software, or duplicate utilities. Check Application Support folders in ~/Library for leftover files from deleted applications that weren't properly uninstalled.
  7. Manage Photos and Media libraries. Open Photos and delete unwanted images, especially screenshots, duplicates, and Live Photos. Empty the Recently Deleted album to permanently remove photos. For large video files, move them to external storage or compress them using built-in tools in Photos or iMovie.
