How to set up passkeys on Mac

Replace passwords with secure passkeys on your Mac. Follow this guide to manage and use passkeys stored in iCloud Keychain for seamless authentication.

  1. Verify iCloud Keychain synchronization. Open System Settings from the Apple menu and select your Apple Account name at the top of the sidebar. Click iCloud, select Passwords & Keychain, and ensure Sync this Mac is toggled to the On position.
  2. Access your saved passkeys. Open the Passwords app from your Applications folder or via Spotlight. Use your Mac login password or Touch ID to unlock the vault when prompted.
  3. Register a passkey on a website. Navigate to the security or account settings page of the website or service you wish to secure. Select the option to Add a Passkey or Use Passkeys, which is typically found within the Login and Security section.
  4. Confirm with Touch ID or password. A system dialog will appear asking you to save the passkey to iCloud Keychain. Confirm your identity by touching the Touch ID sensor on your keyboard or entering your Mac system password.
  5. Review and delete passkeys. Return to the Passwords app to view all stored credentials. Select a passkey from the list to see its details, or click the minus button to remove the passkey if you no longer require it for a specific account.
