Configuring Finder for Optimal Workflow

Streamline your file management by configuring Finder settings, sidebar organization, and default folder views on macOS.

  1. Adjust General Finder preferences. Open Finder and select Finder > Settings from the menu bar. In the General tab, ensure your hard disks and external drives are selected to appear on the desktop for immediate access.
  2. Customize the Sidebar. Within the Finder Settings window, click the Sidebar tab. Check the boxes for Home, Documents, Downloads, and iCloud Drive to ensure these locations appear in every Finder window.
  3. Set the default startup folder. In the General tab of Finder Settings, locate 'New Finder windows show:'. Click the dropdown menu and select your most frequently accessed folder, such as Home or Documents, rather than Recents.
  4. Configure Advanced file path visibility. Select the Advanced tab in Finder Settings. Check 'Show filename extensions' to verify file formats at a glance and 'Show full path bar' to see the exact directory structure at the bottom of every window.
  5. Enable the Status Bar. Open a new Finder window. Select View > Show Status Bar from the top menu bar. This displays the remaining disk space and total item count at the bottom of every active folder.
  6. Set default view options. Open your preferred folder, select View > Show View Options from the menu bar, and set your desired view (List or Column). Click 'Use as Defaults' to apply these settings globally to all folders.
