How to Set Up FileVault on Mac
Enable FileVault disk encryption on your Mac to secure your data. Complete setup guide with recovery key management and troubleshooting tips.
- Open System Preferences. Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner and select System Preferences. Alternatively, press Command + Space to open Spotlight search, type 'System Preferences', and press Enter.
- Navigate to Security & Privacy. Click on Security & Privacy in the System Preferences window. If you're using macOS Ventura or later, click Privacy & Security in the System Settings sidebar.
- Access the FileVault tab. Click the FileVault tab at the top of the Security & Privacy window. You'll see the current status of FileVault encryption for your startup disk.
- Enable FileVault encryption. Click the 'Turn On FileVault' button. macOS will prompt you to choose how you want to unlock your disk and reset your password if you forget it.
- Choose your recovery method. Select either 'Allow my iCloud account to unlock my disk' or 'Create a recovery key and do not use my iCloud account'. The iCloud option is more convenient but stores recovery information in iCloud. The recovery key option gives you complete control but requires you to store the key safely.
- Start the encryption process. Click Continue after selecting your recovery method. FileVault will begin encrypting your disk in the background. Your Mac remains usable during this process, though performance may be slightly reduced.
- Monitor encryption progress. Return to the FileVault tab in Security & Privacy to check encryption progress. A progress bar shows the percentage completed. Once finished, the status will show 'FileVault is turned on for the disk'.
