How to Set Up AirPlay on Mac

Learn how to enable and configure AirPlay on your Mac to wirelessly stream content to Apple TV, smart TVs, and speakers with step-by-step instructions.

  1. Open System Settings. Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner of your screen and select System Settings. Alternatively, press Command + Space to open Spotlight and type 'System Settings'.
  2. Navigate to Displays settings. In the sidebar, scroll down and click on Displays. If you're using macOS Ventura or later, you'll see display options including AirPlay settings in the main panel.
  3. Enable AirPlay Display. Click the dropdown menu next to 'AirPlay Display' and select either 'Available to everyone' or 'Available to everyone on the same network'. Choose 'Available to everyone on the same network' for better security.
  4. Configure AirPlay password protection. If prompted, set up password protection by checking 'Require password' and entering a custom password. This prevents unauthorized users from connecting to your Mac via AirPlay.
  5. Verify Wi-Fi network connection. Ensure your Mac and the device you want to AirPlay to are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Click the Wi-Fi icon in the menu bar to check your current network connection.
  6. Test AirPlay connectivity. Look for the AirPlay icon in your menu bar or Control Center. Click it to see available AirPlay devices. Select your target device to begin mirroring or extending your display.
  7. Adjust display arrangement. Once connected, return to System Settings > Displays to arrange multiple displays. Drag the display rectangles to match your physical setup, or check 'Mirror Displays' to show identical content on both screens.
