How to set up Touch ID on Mac

Follow this guide to set up Touch ID on your Mac for secure, one-touch access to your device, apps, and purchases.

  1. Open System Settings. Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner of your screen. Select System Settings from the dropdown menu to open the control panel.
  2. Access Touch ID & Password. Scroll down the sidebar on the left side of the window. Click the Touch ID & Password menu item to reveal your authentication settings.
  3. Add a fingerprint. Click the Add Fingerprint button located in the Touch ID section. You will be prompted to enter your user account password to verify your identity.
  4. Scan your fingerprint. Place your finger on the Touch ID sensor located at the top right of your keyboard. Lift and rest your finger repeatedly, adjusting the angle slightly to capture the edges of your print as the on-screen animation guides you.
  5. Complete the process. Once the interface confirms that the fingerprint is added, click Done. Your Mac is now ready to use Touch ID for unlocking the computer and authorizing secure actions.
  6. Toggle specific features. Review the toggle switches under the Use Touch ID for section. Enable specific items such as Unlocking your Mac, Apple Pay, or Password Autofill based on your security preferences.
