How to Configure the macOS Application Firewall

Secure your Mac by managing the built-in Application Firewall. Follow these steps to control incoming network connections for enhanced security.

  1. Open System Settings. Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner of your screen. Select System Settings from the dropdown menu to open the central configuration interface.
  2. Access Network Settings. Scroll down the left-hand sidebar of the System Settings window. Click on Network to reveal the network configuration pane, then click on Firewall.
  3. Enable the Firewall. Toggle the switch next to Firewall to the On position. If prompted, enter your administrator password to authorize the change to your system security settings.
  4. Configure Firewall Options. Click the Options button located next to the Firewall toggle. This opens a modal window containing advanced parameters for incoming connection handling.
  5. Set Connection Rules. Enable 'Block all incoming connections' if you require maximum security and do not use file sharing or remote login services. Alternatively, leave this disabled to allow essential services while maintaining per-application control.
  6. Define App Exceptions. Use the plus (+) and minus (-) buttons in the Options menu to add or remove specific applications. Set each application to either 'Allow incoming connections' or 'Block incoming connections' based on your security requirements.
