How to Reinstall Mac Apps After Migration

Learn how to efficiently reinstall or restore Mac applications after migrating data to a new device. Ensure compatibility and performance across macOS.

  1. Verify application compatibility. Open System Settings and navigate to General > About to ensure your macOS version supports your migrated software. Check the developer's website for specific silicon architecture requirements if migrating from an Intel-based Mac. Confirm that your apps are not marked with a crossed-out circle icon in the Applications folder.
  2. Update migrated apps via App Store. Launch the App Store from the Dock or Applications folder. Click on your profile icon in the bottom-left corner to view your purchased applications. Click the Update All button if available, or locate individual apps to initiate updates which often repair broken file paths created during migration.
  3. Redownload missing or corrupted applications. If an application fails to launch, move the corrupted version to the Trash. Navigate to your Purchased tab in the App Store, click the cloud download icon next to the specific app, and wait for the fresh installation to complete. This process pulls a clean binary directly from Apple's servers.
  4. Restore library support files. Migration assistant often leaves configuration files in the User Library. Navigate to Finder, select Go from the menu bar, and hold the Option key to reveal the Library folder. Check ~/Library/Application Support/ to ensure the folder corresponding to your reinstalled application exists and contains the necessary configuration data.
  5. Authorize third-party software. Apps installed outside the Mac App Store often require re-authentication. Launch the application and provide your credentials when prompted. If the app fails to open, go to System Settings > Privacy & Security and look for a notification stating that software from an identified developer was blocked; click Open Anyway to authorize it.
  6. Perform a system restart. Close all active applications and restart your Mac to flush the system cache. This ensures that new application frameworks and updated dependencies are correctly indexed by macOS. Check your Login Items in System Settings > General > Login Items to remove any legacy helpers from your previous machine.
