How to Transfer Data to a New Mac Using Migration Assistant

Follow this guide to securely transfer your files, settings, and apps to a new Mac using Migration Assistant. Ensure a seamless setup process.

  1. Update both Macs. Ensure both the source and target Macs are running the latest version of macOS. Go to System Settings > General > Software Update on both machines to confirm no pending updates remain.
  2. Establish the network. Connect both Macs to the same local network. For the fastest transfer speeds, use a Thunderbolt or Ethernet cable to connect the two devices directly.
  3. Open Migration Assistant. On both Macs, open Migration Assistant. You can find this by pressing Command + Space, typing 'Migration Assistant', and pressing Return, or by navigating to Applications > Utilities.
  4. Set the transfer direction. On your new Mac, select 'From a Mac, Time Machine backup, or Startup disk' and click Continue. On your old Mac, select 'To another Mac' when prompted.
  5. Confirm the security code. A security code will appear on both screens. Verify that the codes match, then click Continue on your old Mac to initiate the pairing process.
  6. Choose your migration data. Select the information you wish to move from your old Mac to the new one, including Applications, User folders, and System settings. Review the total storage requirement and click Continue to begin.
  7. Finalize the setup. Once the progress bar reaches completion, click Done. Log in to your user account on the new Mac to verify that all applications and files have migrated successfully.
