How to Back Up Your Mac Using Time Machine

Follow this procedure to create a secure system backup using Time Machine before installing new software or performing a system update.

  1. Connect the external storage device. Plug your external hard drive or SSD directly into your Mac. Use the fastest available port, such as Thunderbolt 4 or USB-C, to ensure optimal transfer speeds during the initial backup.
  2. Open Time Machine settings. Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner of the screen and select System Settings. Navigate to General in the sidebar, then click on Time Machine.
  3. Add the backup disk. Click the Add Backup Disk button, or the plus (+) icon if you have existing backups. Select your external drive from the list of available devices and click Set Up Disk.
  4. Enable disk encryption. Select the option to Encrypt Backup to ensure your data remains secure. Enter a strong password when prompted, as you will need this key to restore your files if the original drive is lost or damaged.
  5. Initiate the backup. Time Machine will automatically begin the first backup shortly after configuration. If it does not start, click the Time Machine icon in the menu bar and select Back Up Now.
  6. Confirm backup completion. Monitor the progress via the Time Machine settings menu. Once the status indicates the backup is finished, the drive is ready, and you may safely proceed with your software installation.
