How to Fix Mac Bluetooth Not Working

Fix Mac Bluetooth issues with these proven troubleshooting steps. Reset modules, clear caches, and restore wireless connectivity in minutes.

  1. Check Bluetooth status and visibility. Click the Apple menu > System Preferences > Bluetooth. Verify Bluetooth is turned on and your Mac is discoverable. If the Bluetooth option is missing or grayed out, note this for hardware troubleshooting. Ensure your target device is in pairing mode and within 30 feet.
  2. Reset the Bluetooth module. Hold Shift + Option and click the Bluetooth menu bar icon. Select "Reset the Bluetooth module" from the debug menu. Click "OK" to confirm the reset. Your Mac will restart the Bluetooth service and clear temporary connection data.
  3. Delete Bluetooth preference files. Quit System Preferences completely. Open Finder and press Command + Shift + G. Type ~/Library/Preferences and press Enter. Delete com.apple.Bluetooth.plist if it exists. Empty the Trash and restart your Mac to rebuild the Bluetooth configuration.
  4. Clear the Bluetooth cache. Open Terminal from Applications > Utilities. Type sudo rm -rf /Library/Preferences/com.apple.Bluetooth.plist and press Enter. Enter your administrator password when prompted. This removes system-level Bluetooth preferences that may be corrupted.
  5. Reset SMC and PRAM. Shut down your Mac completely. For Intel Macs, press and hold Shift + Control + Option on the left side plus the power button for 10 seconds. For M1/M2 Macs, simply restart and continue to the next step. After starting up, immediately hold Command + Option + P + R until you hear the startup sound twice.
  6. Remove and re-add problematic devices. Open System Preferences > Bluetooth. Find devices showing as "Not Connected" or "Paired" but not working. Click the X next to each device and select "Remove". Put your device in pairing mode and click "Set Up New Device" to establish a fresh connection.
  7. Check for interference and update macOS. Move away from WiFi routers, microwaves, and other 2.4GHz devices that can interfere with Bluetooth. Open System Preferences > Software Update and install any pending macOS updates. Restart after updating and test Bluetooth connectivity with your devices.
