Mastering Portrait Mode on iPhone
Learn to capture professional-grade portraits on your iPhone. Master lighting, depth control, and composition for sharp, studio-quality images.
- Activate Portrait Mode and select your focal length. Open the Camera app and swipe to the Portrait mode option located above the shutter button. Tap the numerical indicator (1x, 2x, or 3x) to select a focal length that minimizes distortion and provides a flattering compression for facial features.
- Optimize distance and lighting cues. Follow the on-screen prompts to move closer or further from your subject until the depth effect box turns yellow. Ensure your subject is illuminated by soft, indirect light to avoid harsh shadows on the face.
- Adjust aperture for depth control. Tap the 'f' icon in the top-right corner to reveal the Depth Control slider. Slide the controller to adjust the f-stop between f/1.4 and f/16 to dictate how much of the background remains blurred or in focus.
- Apply Portrait Lighting effects. Swipe left or right on the lighting wheel located above the shutter button to toggle through different studio lighting effects. These modes, such as Studio Light or Contour Light, manipulate the lighting on your subject's face in real-time.
- Capture and edit depth data. Tap the shutter button to take the photo. Once captured, you can modify the depth and lighting effects later by opening the image in the Photos app, tapping Edit, and re-adjusting the 'f' icon or the lighting wheel.
