How to Configure a Focus Mode for Absolute Silence

Stop interruptions. Configure a custom Focus mode on iPhone to block all notifications, calls, and pings for total concentration.

  1. Initialize a new custom Focus. Open Settings and select Focus. Tap the plus (+) icon in the top-right corner, select Custom, name your Focus, choose a representative icon, and tap Next.
  2. Restrict people and apps. Tap People and set it to Allow Notifications From. Ensure the list is empty to prevent any incoming messages from triggering a vibration or sound. Repeat this process in the Apps section, ensuring no applications are selected for notification allowance.
  3. Disable time-sensitive bypasses. Tap Options within the Focus menu. Toggle off 'Allow Apps to Send Time-Sensitive Notifications' to ensure even high-priority alerts are silenced. Confirm that 'Silence Notifications' is set to 'Always' rather than 'While Locked'.
  4. Hide notification badges. Select Focus Filters under the Options menu. Toggle on 'Hide Notification Badges' to prevent red counters from appearing on app icons. This removes the visual urge to check for missed activity while the mode is active.
  5. Set manual activation. Avoid Smart Activation to prevent the iPhone from guessing when you need silence. Instead, swipe down from the top-right to access Control Center, tap the Focus button, and manually select your created mode. This ensures the quiet state persists until you actively disable it.
  6. Test the silence state. Have a contact send a message while the Focus is active. Confirm that your device does not play a sound, light up the display, or provide haptic feedback. Check the Notification Center afterward to ensure the message was collected silently in the background.
