How to Free Up Storage on iPhone
Clear iPhone storage space by deleting unused apps, optimizing photos, clearing cache, and managing downloads. Quick steps to reclaim gigabytes.
- Check your storage usage. Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Wait for the analysis to complete. This shows which apps and data types consume the most space. The colored bar at the top visualizes your storage breakdown by category.
- Enable Optimize iPhone Storage for photos. Go to Settings > Photos > Optimize iPhone Storage. This keeps full-resolution photos in iCloud while storing smaller versions locally. Your photos remain accessible but use significantly less device storage.
- Delete large unused apps. Return to Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Tap apps that show large storage usage but aren't essential. Choose "Delete App" to remove the app and all its data permanently, or "Offload App" to keep documents and data while removing the app itself.
- Clear Safari cache and downloads. In Settings > Safari, tap "Clear History and Website Data" to remove browsing cache. Then go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage > Safari and delete items in the Downloads section that you no longer need.
- Review and delete old messages. Open Settings > Messages > Keep Messages and change from "Forever" to "1 Year" or "30 Days". Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage > Messages to see attachment breakdown. Delete large video attachments and photo threads manually.
- Remove downloaded music and videos. In Settings > General > iPhone Storage, tap Music, TV, or Podcasts apps. Swipe left on downloaded content you don't need offline and tap Delete. Streaming content remains available but won't consume local storage.
- Empty Recently Deleted album. Open Photos app and tap Albums > Recently Deleted. Tap Select > Delete All to permanently remove photos and videos. Items in Recently Deleted continue consuming storage for 30 days after deletion.
