How to Encrypt iPhone Backups on macOS

Secure your iPhone data by enabling local encryption for backups. Follow these steps to protect your device information with a password.

  1. Connect the device to your Mac. Plug your iPhone into your Mac using a certified data cable. Unlock your iPhone and tap Trust on the prompt if the device asks to trust this computer.
  2. Open Finder. Click the Finder icon in your Dock. Look for your iPhone in the sidebar under the Locations header and click it to open the management interface.
  3. Find the Backups section. Select the General tab in the main window. Scroll down until you see the Backups section containing radio buttons for backup locations.
  4. Enable encryption. Check the box labeled Encrypt local backup. A dialog box will appear prompting you to enter and verify a password.
  5. Set the password. Enter your chosen password into the password and verify fields. Click Set Password to confirm and begin the encryption process.
  6. Confirm backup status. Click Back Up Now to trigger an encrypted backup immediately. A progress bar will appear at the top of the Finder window confirming the secure data transfer.
