How to Analyze iPhone Battery Health and Performance

Learn how to monitor iPhone battery health, identify performance throttling, and interpret diagnostic data to optimize your device longevity.

  1. Access Battery Health settings. Open the Settings app on your iPhone. Scroll down and tap Battery, then select Battery Health & Charging. This screen provides the primary metric for your current hardware status.
  2. Interpret Maximum Capacity percentage. Observe the Maximum Capacity indicator. This value represents your battery capacity relative to when it was new; a lower percentage indicates decreased usage time between charges. Capacity below 80% is the threshold where iOS considers the battery worn.
  3. Check for Peak Performance Capability. Look for the Peak Performance Capability section under your battery percentage. If your iPhone has experienced unexpected shutdowns, iOS will automatically apply performance management to prevent future restarts. If this is active, you will see a link to disable it.
  4. Review usage patterns. Return to the main Battery menu to view the battery usage breakdown. Tap Show Activity to see which applications consume the most power over the last 24 hours or the last 10 days. Identify high-drain apps that may be causing excessive heat or rapid discharge.
  5. Enable Optimized Battery Charging. Within the Battery Health & Charging menu, toggle the switch for Optimized Battery Charging to On. This feature reduces battery wear by delaying the final charge phase until just before you need to use the device. It utilizes on-device machine learning to track your daily charging routine.
