How to Back Up iPhone to iCloud

Step-by-step guide to automatically back up your iPhone data to iCloud. Learn to enable iCloud backup and manage storage settings.

  1. Connect to Wi-Fi and verify Apple ID. Open Settings and tap Wi-Fi to connect to a network. Tap your name at the top of Settings to verify you're signed into your Apple ID. If not signed in, tap Sign in to Your iPhone and enter your credentials.
  2. Access iCloud backup settings. In Settings, tap your name, then tap iCloud. Scroll down and tap iCloud Backup. You'll see the current backup status and when your last backup completed.
  3. Enable iCloud Backup. Toggle on Back Up This iPhone if it's currently disabled. Your iPhone will now automatically back up daily when connected to power, locked, and on Wi-Fi. The initial backup may take several hours depending on your data.
  4. Start manual backup. Tap Back Up Now to create an immediate backup. The progress bar shows backup status. Keep your iPhone connected to Wi-Fi and power during this process. Don't force-close Settings or turn off your device.
  5. Verify backup completion. When complete, the screen shows Last Backup with today's date and time. Tap Back Up Now again to refresh the timestamp and confirm your backup succeeded. Failed backups show an error message with troubleshooting steps.
  6. Manage iCloud storage. Return to iCloud settings and tap Manage Storage to see backup size and available space. If storage is full, tap Change Storage Plan to upgrade or tap a backup to delete old device backups you no longer need.
