How to Fix 'Unable to Check for Update' Errors on iPhone

Resolve the 'Unable to Check for Update' error on your iPhone. Follow these steps to restore connectivity and finalize your iOS software installation.

  1. Toggle Network Settings. Open Control Center by swiping down from the top-right corner. Tap the Airplane Mode icon to enable it, wait 10 seconds, and tap it again to disable it. This forces the iPhone to re-establish a fresh handshake with your Wi-Fi or cellular network.
  2. Disable VPN and Security Profiles. Navigate to Settings > General > VPN & Device Management. If a VPN profile is active, tap it and toggle the status to Not Connected. If you have custom security or beta profiles installed, remove them, as they often block Apple's update servers.
  3. Clear Corrupted Update Files. Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Locate the iOS update file in the list of applications. Tap the update and select Delete Update to remove any partially downloaded, corrupted installation data.
  4. Reset Network Settings. Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone. Tap Reset, then select Reset Network Settings. Your device will reboot, clearing all saved Wi-Fi passwords and custom APN configurations.
  5. Perform a Force Restart. Press and quickly release the Volume Up button, press and quickly release the Volume Down button, and then press and hold the Side button. Continue holding until the Apple logo appears on the display. This flushes the temporary cache that may be stalling the update process.
