How to Fix iPhone Overheating

Fix your overheating iPhone with these proven steps. Cool down your device, identify heat sources, and prevent future overheating issues.

  1. Remove your iPhone from heat sources immediately. Move your iPhone away from direct sunlight, hot surfaces, or enclosed spaces like cars. Remove any case or cover to allow better heat dissipation. Place the device on a cool, flat surface like a table or countertop.
  2. Close resource-intensive apps. Double-tap the Home button or swipe up from the bottom and pause to access the App Switcher. Swipe up on apps that use heavy processing power like games, video editors, or GPS navigation. Close any apps you're not actively using.
  3. Disable unnecessary background processes. Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and toggle it off for apps you don't need updating constantly. Turn off Location Services for non-essential apps in Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services. Disable automatic downloads in Settings > App Store.
  4. Adjust display and connectivity settings. Lower your screen brightness in Settings > Display & Brightness or enable Auto-Brightness. Turn off Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Cellular Data if you're not using them. Switch to Airplane Mode for 30 seconds, then turn it back off to reset network connections.
  5. Stop charging if your iPhone is plugged in. Unplug your iPhone from the charger immediately if it's overheating while charging. Remove it from wireless charging pads. Allow the device to cool completely before resuming charging. Use only Apple-certified cables and adapters.
  6. Restart your iPhone. Press and hold the Volume Down button and Side button simultaneously until the power slider appears. Slide to power off, wait 30 seconds, then press the Side button to restart. For iPhone 8 and later, this force restart can clear software glitches causing overheating.
  7. Check for iOS updates and reset if necessary. Go to Settings > General > Software Update and install any available updates. If overheating persists, back up your data and go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings. This preserves your data while resetting system configurations.
