How to Fix Blurry iPhone Photos

Restore image sharpness on your iPhone. Follow these steps to resolve focus, stability, and software issues affecting your photos.

1. Clean the camera lens. Inspect the camera lens array on the back of your iPhone for fingerprints, dust, or smudges. Use a clean, dry microfiber cloth to wipe the glass in a circular motion. Oils from your fingers are the most common cause of light diffusion and soft focus.
2. Lock the camera focus. Open the Camera app and frame your subject. Tap and hold on the specific area of the screen you want to keep sharp until the yellow box labeled AE/AF Lock appears. This prevents the camera from hunting for focus if your hand moves or the subject shifts.
3. Disable Macro Control. If your phone is automatically switching to Macro mode while you are trying to photograph a distant subject, the transition may cause a momentary blur. Go to Settings > Camera > Macro Control and toggle the setting off to regain manual focus control.
4. Check for software lag. Force quit the Camera app by swiping up from the bottom of the screen and pausing, then flicking the Camera app preview upward. Relaunching the app clears temporary processing memory that may be interfering with the autofocus mechanism.
5. Adjust iCloud optimization settings. If photos appear blurry only after being saved, your device may be fetching low-resolution thumbnails from iCloud. Go to Settings > Photos and ensure 'Download and Keep Originals' is selected. This ensures your device maintains full-resolution files locally.
