How to Use iPad Multitasking Gestures

Master iPad multitasking with gestures for Split View, Slide Over, and app switching. Complete guide for iPadOS navigation and productivity.

  1. Enable multitasking gestures in Settings. Open Settings > Home Screen & Dock > Multitasking. Toggle on Allow Multiple Apps to ensure all multitasking features are active. This setting controls Split View, Slide Over, and Picture in Picture functionality.
  2. Swipe up from the bottom to access the Home Screen. Place your finger at the very bottom edge of the screen and swipe upward in a quick motion. This gesture replaces the Home button and works from any app. The swipe should be swift and decisive to avoid triggering other gestures.
  3. Open the App Switcher with a slow upward swipe. Swipe up from the bottom edge but pause halfway up the screen. Hold for a moment until the App Switcher appears with all your open apps displayed as cards. Release your finger to browse through running applications.
  4. Switch between apps using four-finger gestures. Place four fingers on the screen and swipe left or right to cycle through recently used apps. This creates a smooth transition between applications without returning to the Home Screen or App Switcher.
  5. Create Split View by dragging from the Dock. Open the first app, then swipe up slightly from the bottom to reveal the Dock. Drag a second app from the Dock to either the left or right edge of the screen until you see a vertical line appear. Release to create Split View with both apps sharing the screen.
  6. Use Slide Over for temporary app access. Drag an app from the Dock to the center-right portion of the screen and hold until the Slide Over window appears. The app floats over your current application and can be moved around the screen by dragging the handle at the top.
  7. Access the Control Center with a corner swipe. Swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen to open Control Center. This works from the Home Screen or within any app and provides quick access to settings, connectivity options, and media controls.
