How to Verify Apple Pencil Connectivity After Switching iPads

Ensure your Apple Pencil works correctly after moving to a new iPad. Learn the steps to re-pair, charge, and test your stylus for optimal performance.

  1. Verify physical compatibility. Confirm your Apple Pencil model is supported by your new iPad. Apple Pencil (USB-C) and Apple Pencil Pro are compatible with recent iPad models, while Apple Pencil (2nd Gen) is incompatible with newer models that utilize the magnetic Pro interface. Check the Apple device compatibility matrix if pairing fails immediately.
  2. Remove the previous pairing. Navigate to Settings > Bluetooth. Locate the Apple Pencil in the My Devices list, tap the blue Info icon, and select Forget This Device. This prevents signal interference from your previous hardware configuration.
  3. Initiate the pairing sequence. Attach the Apple Pencil to the magnetic charging connector on the side of your iPad. If using an Apple Pencil (USB-C), plug it directly into the iPad's USB-C port using a cable. A pairing notification will appear on the iPad screen.
  4. Verify battery status. Add the Batteries widget to your Home Screen or Today View by long-pressing an empty area on your screen, tapping the Plus (+) icon, and searching for Batteries. Confirm the Apple Pencil icon displays alongside a charging indicator or charge percentage to ensure a stable electrical connection.
  5. Validate sensor responsiveness. Open the Notes app and create a new note. Test the pressure sensitivity by drawing a line with varying pressure and test tilt functionality by holding the pencil at an angle. If the line thickness changes accordingly, the digitizer and Pencil sensors are calibrated correctly.
