How to Encrypt Your iPad Backups

Secure your iPad data by enabling encrypted backups. Learn how to lock your local backups with a password on macOS and Windows.

  1. Connect the iPad to your computer. Use a USB-C or Lightning cable to connect your iPad to your computer. Ensure the device is unlocked and you have selected 'Trust' on the iPad screen if prompted.
  2. Open Finder or the Apple Devices app. On macOS, open a new Finder window and locate your iPad in the sidebar under 'Locations.' On Windows, launch the Apple Devices app and select your iPad from the sidebar.
  3. Navigate to the General tab. Click on your iPad icon in the sidebar to reveal the management interface. Ensure you are on the 'General' tab to view your backup settings.
  4. Enable Encrypt local backup. Scroll down to the 'Backups' section. Check the box labeled 'Encrypt local backup.' A prompt will appear asking you to create a password.
  5. Set your encryption password. Enter a strong, memorable password in the prompt. You must remember this password to restore from this backup in the future; Apple cannot recover it if you lose it.
  6. Initiate the backup. Click 'Back Up Now' at the bottom of the General tab. The system will now create an encrypted archive of your iPad data on your computer drive.
