How to Convert Handwriting to Text on iPad

Convert your handwritten notes to typed text on iPad using Apple Pencil and Scribble. Works in Notes, Mail, Messages, and other compatible apps.

  1. Enable Scribble in Settings. Open Settings > Apple Pencil > Scribble and toggle on Scribble. This feature requires a compatible Apple Pencil and works on iPad models from 2018 or later running iPadOS 14 or newer.
  2. Open a compatible app. Launch any app that supports text input such as Notes, Mail, Messages, or Pages. Third-party apps like GoodNotes and Notability also support Scribble conversion.
  3. Start writing with Apple Pencil. Tap in any text field and begin writing with your Apple Pencil. Your handwriting automatically converts to typed text as you write. The conversion happens in real-time without additional taps.
  4. Use gesture commands for editing. Circle words to select them, scratch through text to delete, or draw a vertical line to insert space between words. These gestures work immediately without switching tools.
  5. Convert existing handwritten notes. In Notes app, select handwritten text by drawing a circle around it, then tap "Copy as Text" from the popup menu. Paste this converted text anywhere you need typed text.
  6. Switch between languages. Scribble automatically detects English and Chinese writing. For other supported languages, go to Settings > Apple Pencil > Scribble > Languages and add your preferred language.
