How to Connect iPad to TV

Connect your iPad to any TV using wired or wireless methods. Step-by-step instructions for AirPlay, HDMI adapters, and USB-C connections.

  1. Choose your connection method. Determine whether to use wireless AirPlay or a wired connection. AirPlay works with Apple TV or AirPlay 2-compatible smart TVs. For wired connections, you'll need a Lightning to HDMI adapter for older iPads or a USB-C to HDMI adapter for newer models.
  2. Connect wirelessly via AirPlay. Ensure your iPad and Apple TV or AirPlay-compatible TV are on the same Wi-Fi network. Swipe down from the top-right corner of your iPad screen to open Control Center. Tap Screen Mirroring and select your TV from the list.
  3. Set up wired connection with Lightning adapter. For iPads with Lightning ports, connect the Lightning Digital AV Adapter to your iPad's charging port. Connect an HDMI cable from the adapter to an available HDMI port on your TV. Switch your TV to the corresponding HDMI input using your TV remote.
  4. Set up wired connection with USB-C adapter. For iPad Pro models with USB-C, connect a USB-C to HDMI adapter or hub to your iPad. Connect an HDMI cable from the adapter to your TV's HDMI port. Select the correct HDMI input on your TV using the remote control.
  5. Adjust display settings. Once connected, go to Settings > Display & Brightness on your iPad. For wired connections, your iPad screen will automatically mirror to the TV. For AirPlay, you can choose to mirror your screen or use the TV as a second display for supported apps.
  6. Test audio and video playback. Open a video app like Netflix or Photos to test the connection. Audio should automatically route to your TV speakers. If there's no sound, check your TV's volume and ensure it's not muted. For AirPlay connections, you can also adjust audio output in Control Center.
