How to check iPad battery health

Learn how to analyze your iPad battery performance, interpret system analytics logs, and identify when it is time for a battery replacement.

  1. Enable Analytics sharing. Open Settings and navigate to Privacy & Security. Tap Analytics & Improvements and ensure Share iPad Analytics is toggled on. Leave the device for 24 hours to allow the system to generate diagnostic logs.
  2. Extract analytics data. Return to Settings, select Privacy & Security, and tap Analytics & Improvements. Select Analytics Data, locate the most recent file beginning with 'Analytics', and tap it to open. Tap the Share icon in the top right corner and save the file to the Files app.
  3. Interpret the log data. Transfer the file to your computer and rename the file extension from .ips to .txt. Open the file in a text editor and use the search function to look for the term 'last_value_MaximumCapacityPercent'. This value represents the current battery health percentage.
  4. Evaluate cycle count. Search the same text document for 'last_value_CycleCount'. This indicates how many full charge cycles the battery has completed. Apple designs iPad batteries to retain up to 80 percent of their original capacity at 1,000 complete charge cycles.
  5. Determine battery status. Compare your findings against industry standards. If the maximum capacity is below 80 percent or the cycle count exceeds 1,000, the battery is considered consumed. Plan for a battery service through an authorized service provider.
