How to Configure Trackpad Gestures on iPad

Optimize your iPad workflow by customizing trackpad gestures and pointer settings in iPadOS. Learn to navigate, scroll, and control your device with precision.

  1. Pair your pointing device. Connect your Magic Keyboard or external Bluetooth trackpad to the iPad. Navigate to Settings, select Bluetooth, and ensure your device appears under My Devices.
  2. Access trackpad configuration. Open the Settings app on your iPad. Locate the General tab in the sidebar and select Trackpad to reveal all customizable options.
  3. Adjust pointer speed and tracking. Slide the Tracking Speed toggle to the left or right to decrease or increase how quickly the cursor moves across the screen. Test the speed by moving your finger across the trackpad immediately after adjusting.
  4. Enable natural scrolling and tap-to-click. Toggle the Natural Scrolling switch to match the content movement with your finger direction. Enable Tap to Click if you prefer a light touch over a physical press to perform a primary selection.
  5. Set up secondary click. Select Secondary Click from the menu. Choose between One Finger or Two Fingers to define how your trackpad registers a right-click action.
  6. Apply gesture shortcuts. Swipe up with three fingers to return to the Home Screen. Swipe up and hold with three fingers to open the App Switcher, or swipe left or right with three fingers to transition between open apps.
