How to Set Up iPad for Children
Complete guide to configure iPad parental controls, restrict content, set screen time limits, and create a safe digital environment for kids.
- Create a child Apple ID or use Family Sharing. Open Settings > [Your Name] > Family Sharing > Add Family Member. Choose 'Create an Account for a Child' and follow the prompts to set up their Apple ID. This gives you control over their purchases and downloads while maintaining separate user profiles.
- Enable Screen Time restrictions. Navigate to Settings > Screen Time > Turn On Screen Time > This is My Child's iPad. Set daily time limits for app categories, schedule downtime hours, and configure communication limits. Create a Screen Time passcode that only you know to prevent changes.
- Configure content and privacy restrictions. Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions and toggle on. Set age-appropriate ratings for movies, TV shows, books, and apps. Disable in-app purchases, prevent installation and deletion of apps, and restrict explicit content in iTunes Store and App Store.
- Set up Guided Access for focused app use. Open Settings > Accessibility > Guided Access and toggle on. Set a passcode and configure time limits. When your child uses educational apps, triple-click the home button (or side button on newer iPads) to start Guided Access, preventing them from switching to other apps.
- Install and approve child-appropriate apps. Download educational apps, games, and entertainment suitable for your child's age. Check app ratings and reviews before installation. If your child has their own Apple ID, they'll need to request permission for downloads, which you can approve from your device.
- Configure communication and contact restrictions. In Screen Time > Communication Limits, set who your child can communicate with during allowed screen time and downtime. Add approved contacts to their contacts list and restrict communication with unknown numbers through Messages and FaceTime.
- Set up location sharing and Find My iPad. Enable Find My iPad in Settings > [Child's Name] > Find My > Find My iPad. Turn on location sharing so you can track the device's location. This helps locate lost devices and provides peace of mind about your child's whereabouts.
- Test all settings and create usage rules. Go through each app and feature to ensure restrictions work as intended. Create clear rules with your child about iPad usage, including when they can use it, which apps are allowed, and consequences for misuse. Show them how to ask for help if they encounter problems.
