How to Connect a Keyboard to Your iPad
Connect any keyboard to your iPad using Bluetooth pairing or Smart Connector. Step-by-step guide for wireless and wired keyboard setup on iPadOS.
- Check your keyboard compatibility. Verify your keyboard works with iPad. Bluetooth keyboards from any manufacturer will work. Apple's Magic Keyboard, Smart Keyboard, and Smart Keyboard Folio connect directly without pairing. USB keyboards require a USB-C to USB adapter for older iPad models.
- Open iPad Settings. Tap the Settings app on your home screen. The gray icon with gears is typically located on the first page of apps. If you cannot find it, swipe down from the middle of your screen and search for Settings.
- Navigate to Bluetooth settings. Tap Bluetooth in the Settings menu. Ensure Bluetooth is turned on by checking the toggle switch at the top shows green. If disabled, tap the toggle to enable Bluetooth connectivity.
- Put your keyboard in pairing mode. Press and hold the Bluetooth button on your keyboard until the status light blinks or flashes. For Apple Magic Keyboard, hold the power button until the green light blinks. Each keyboard model has different pairing methods, so consult your keyboard manual if needed.
- Select your keyboard from the device list. Look for your keyboard name under Other Devices in the Bluetooth settings. Tap the keyboard name when it appears. Your iPad will attempt to establish the connection automatically.
- Enter the pairing code if prompted. Some keyboards require a numeric pairing code. Type the displayed code on your keyboard and press Enter or Return. The code typically appears as a 6-digit number on your iPad screen. Skip this step if no code appears.
- Verify the connection. Check that your keyboard appears under My Devices with a Connected status. Open any app with text input like Notes and test typing. The on-screen keyboard should automatically disappear when your physical keyboard is active.
