How to Fix an Unresponsive iPad Keyboard
Resolve unresponsive software or physical keyboards on your iPad. Follow these steps to reset settings and clear conflicts for immediate text entry.
- Perform a force restart. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button. Press and hold the top button until the Apple logo appears on the screen.
- Disconnect external hardware. Unplug any physical keyboards or USB-C hubs currently connected to the iPad. If using a Magic Keyboard or Smart Keyboard, detach the iPad and wipe the Smart Connector contacts on both the device and the accessory with a dry microfiber cloth.
- Remove third-party keyboards. Navigate to Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards. Swipe left on any third-party keyboards listed and tap Delete. Restart your iPad to force the default Apple keyboard to re-initialize.
- Reset the keyboard dictionary. Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad. Tap Reset, then select Reset Keyboard Dictionary. Enter your passcode when prompted and confirm the action.
- Reset all network settings. Navigate to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad. Tap Reset and select Reset Network Settings. This will revert Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and VPN configurations to factory defaults.
- Check for iPadOS updates. Connect your iPad to a stable Wi-Fi network and power source. Open Settings > General > Software Update. If an update is available, tap Update Now to install the latest patches for input drivers.
