How to Fix iPad Unable to Check for Update

Resolve iPadOS update errors with this step-by-step guide. Fix connection issues and server timeouts to successfully install the latest iPadOS firmware.

  1. Verify network connectivity. Ensure your iPad is connected to a stable Wi-Fi network. Open Safari and load a new webpage to confirm active internet access; cellular data often fails to trigger the update verification process.
  2. Force restart the iPad. Clear temporary cache errors by performing a hard reset. Press and quickly release the Volume Up button, press and quickly release the Volume Down button, then press and hold the Top button until the Apple logo appears.
  3. Remove existing update files. Navigate to Settings > General > iPad Storage. Locate the iOS update file in the list, tap it, and select Delete Update to remove any corrupted installation packages that may be blocking a fresh request.
  4. Check Apple System Status. Confirm that Apple’s update servers are operational. Visit the official Apple System Status webpage and verify that the status circle for 'iOS/iPadOS Software Update' is green.
  5. Update via Finder or iTunes. Connect your iPad to a computer via cable. On macOS, open Finder and select your iPad in the sidebar; on Windows, open iTunes and click the device icon. Under the General tab, click 'Check for Update' to bypass local software conflicts.
