How to Fix an Unresponsive iPad Touch Screen

Restore functionality to your unresponsive iPad screen using force restart techniques, hardware checks, and software recovery methods.

  1. Clean the screen surface. Debris, moisture, or oils on the display can interfere with capacitive touch sensors. Use a clean, slightly damp microfiber cloth to wipe the surface thoroughly. Ensure the screen is completely dry before attempting to interact with it again.
  2. Remove accessories and cases. Remove all external covers, screen protectors, and peripherals connected to the iPad. A faulty screen protector or a misaligned case can apply constant pressure on the digitizer, causing phantom touches or total unresponsiveness.
  3. Perform a forced restart. For iPads without a Home button, press and quickly release the Volume Up button, press and quickly release the Volume Down button, then press and hold the Top button until the Apple logo appears. For iPads with a Home button, press and hold both the Home and Top buttons simultaneously until the logo appears.
  4. Update iPadOS via computer. Connect your iPad to a computer using a USB cable. Open Finder on macOS or iTunes on Windows. Select your device and navigate to the General tab, then click Check for Update to install the latest software patch without wiping your personal data.
  5. Perform a factory reset. If software remains unresponsive, connect to your computer and select Restore iPad in the device management screen. This action completely erases all data and re-installs the firmware. Ensure you have a recent backup via iCloud or local storage before proceeding.
