How to Fix iPad Sound Not Working
Fix iPad sound issues with these proven troubleshooting steps. Restore audio for apps, videos, music, and system sounds on your iPad quickly.
- Check the volume and mute settings. Press the volume up button on the side of your iPad to increase volume. Look for the volume indicator on screen. If you see a bell icon with a line through it, your iPad is muted. Toggle the mute switch on the side of your iPad or swipe down from the top-right corner to access Control Center and tap the bell icon to unmute.
- Verify app-specific volume controls. Open the app where sound isn't working. Look for volume controls within the app interface, especially in video players or games. Many apps have independent volume settings that override system volume. Adjust the in-app volume slider to maximum and test audio playback.
- Disconnect Bluetooth audio devices. Open Settings > Bluetooth. Look for connected headphones, speakers, or other audio devices showing as "Connected." Tap the "i" icon next to each connected audio device and select "Disconnect." Test your iPad's built-in speakers immediately after disconnecting.
- Clean the speaker grilles and charging port. Power off your iPad completely. Use a clean, dry toothbrush to gently brush the speaker grilles along the bottom edge. Remove any debris from the Lightning or USB-C charging port using a toothpick or compressed air. Accumulated lint and dust can block sound output and interfere with audio detection.
- Force restart your iPad. For iPads with Face ID: Press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the top button until the Apple logo appears. For iPads with a home button: Press and hold both the home button and top button simultaneously until the Apple logo appears.
- Reset all settings. Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset All Settings. Enter your passcode when prompted. This resets all system settings to defaults while keeping your data intact. Your iPad will restart automatically. Test audio immediately after the reset completes.
- Update iPadOS to the latest version. Connect to Wi-Fi and go to Settings > General > Software Update. If an update is available, tap "Download and Install." Allow the update to complete fully, which may take 30-60 minutes. Test audio functionality after your iPad restarts with the new software version.
- Contact Apple Support for hardware diagnosis. If sound remains non-functional after completing all software troubleshooting steps, the issue is likely hardware-related. Schedule an appointment at an Apple Store or authorized service provider through the Apple Support app or apple.com/support. Hardware audio failures require professional diagnosis and repair.
