How to Fix an Unresponsive iPad Keyboard

Troubleshoot and resolve software or hardware issues when your iPad keyboard stops responding. Follow these steps to restore functionality.

  1. Perform a forced restart. A forced restart clears the temporary memory and resolves many input-related software conflicts. Press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the top power button until the Apple logo appears on the display.
  2. Reset the keyboard dictionary. Corrupted dictionary files can cause the system keyboard to hang. Navigate to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset, then select Reset Keyboard Dictionary and confirm your action.
  3. Disconnect external input devices. If you are using a Magic Keyboard or a third-party Bluetooth peripheral, the iPad may prioritize that connection even if it is malfunctioning. Turn off Bluetooth via Settings > Bluetooth to force the iPad to default to the on-screen keyboard.
  4. Update to the latest iPadOS. System-wide input bugs are often addressed in point releases. Go to Settings > General > Software Update to check for available updates. If an update is pending, download and install it immediately.
  5. Disable Full Keyboard Access. The Full Keyboard Access feature can sometimes interfere with standard typing interactions. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Keyboards and ensure Full Keyboard Access is toggled off.
  6. Reset all settings. If the keyboard remains unresponsive, resetting system settings will revert configurations to factory defaults without deleting your files. Navigate to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset and select Reset All Settings.
