How to Fix an Apple Pencil That Will Not Pair With Your iPad

Resolve Apple Pencil connectivity issues on iPad with these direct troubleshooting steps. Fix pairing errors, battery issues, and Bluetooth configuration.

  1. Verify Apple Pencil Compatibility. Confirm your Apple Pencil model is supported by your specific iPad hardware. Misaligned hardware generations will prevent the pairing handshake entirely. Check the Apple support documentation to ensure your stylus generation corresponds with your iPad model.
  2. Enable Bluetooth Connectivity. Navigate to Settings > Bluetooth and ensure the toggle is switched to the On position. If it is already on, toggle it off, wait five seconds, and toggle it back on to refresh the connection stack.
  3. Forget the Existing Device. If the Apple Pencil appears in the list under Settings > Bluetooth under My Devices, tap the blue 'i' icon next to the name. Select Forget This Device and confirm the action to clear any corrupt pairing cache.
  4. Charge the Apple Pencil. Attach the Apple Pencil to the magnetic connector on the right side of the iPad or plug it into the Lightning or USB-C port depending on your model. Allow the device to charge for at least 15 minutes before attempting to pair again.
  5. Complete the Pairing Process. Once charged, re-attach or re-plug the Apple Pencil to your iPad. Look for a pairing request notification to appear on the screen and tap Pair. If no notification appears, restart your iPad by navigating to Settings > General > Shut Down and retry the physical attachment.
