How to Fix AirDrop Not Working on iPad

Resolve AirDrop connectivity issues on your iPad with this step-by-step troubleshooting guide. Restore wireless file sharing in minutes.

  1. Verify AirDrop visibility settings. Open the Control Center by swiping down from the top-right corner of the screen. Long-press the network card, tap the AirDrop icon, and ensure it is set to Contacts Only or Everyone for 10 Minutes. Selecting Receiving Off prevents the device from appearing to others.
  2. Cycle Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. AirDrop relies on both radios to establish a connection. Navigate to Settings, tap Wi-Fi, and toggle the switch off, wait five seconds, then toggle it back on. Repeat this process for Bluetooth in the Settings menu to reset the handshake protocols.
  3. Disable Personal Hotspot. AirDrop functionality is automatically suspended when a Personal Hotspot is active. Go to Settings, tap Personal Hotspot, and ensure the Allow Others to Join toggle is set to the off position. Attempt the AirDrop transfer again once the hotspot is disabled.
  4. Perform a soft restart. Clear temporary system glitches by restarting your iPad. Press and hold either volume button and the top button until the power-off slider appears, drag it, and wait 30 seconds before holding the top button to power the device back on.
  5. Check for iPadOS updates. Outdated software can lead to handshake failures between devices. Go to Settings, tap General, and select Software Update. Install any available updates to ensure your communication protocols are current and compatible with other Apple devices.
