How to Back Up Your Android Configuration Before a Factory Reset
Ensure your apps, settings, and data are secure. Follow this protocol to back up your Android device before changing or resetting your configuration.
- Trigger a manual Google Drive backup. Open the Settings app and navigate to System > Backup. Ensure the 'Backup by Google One' toggle is set to On, then tap 'Back up now' to capture your current apps, SMS, call history, and device settings to the cloud.
- Secure local photos and videos. Open the Google Photos app, tap your profile icon, and ensure 'Backup' is enabled. If any folders remain unsynced, tap Photos settings > Backup > Back up device folders and toggle the required switches to ON.
- Export two-factor authentication tokens. Open your primary authenticator app (such as Google Authenticator). Select the menu icon, choose 'Transfer accounts,' and tap 'Export accounts' to generate a QR code or cloud backup sync for your 2FA seeds.
- Verify application-specific data. Check banking, messaging, and productivity apps for internal backup features. Specifically, confirm your WhatsApp, Signal, or Telegram message history is manually synced to your linked Google Drive account via the app's settings menu.
- Transfer local files to external storage. Connect your device to a computer via USB. Set the connection mode to 'File Transfer' in the notification shade, then manually copy sensitive documents from the internal storage to a secure location on your local drive.
- Confirm account credentials. Verify you know the username and password for the primary Google account associated with the device. Without these credentials, Factory Reset Protection (FRP) will prevent you from accessing the device after a reset.
