Preparing Your Android Device for Wired Data Transfer

Follow these steps to prepare your Android device for a secure and efficient wired data transfer between phones.

  1. Update the operating system. Open the Settings app and navigate to System > Software update. Ensure both the source and target devices are running the latest version of Android to prevent compatibility conflicts during the transfer process.
  2. Verify battery levels. Confirm both devices have at least 50% battery life. Wired transfers consume significant power and a device shutdown mid-process can result in data corruption.
  3. Remove screen locks. Navigate to Security & privacy > Device unlock > Screen lock. Temporarily disable your PIN, pattern, or biometric security to prevent the transfer from hanging due to authentication prompts.
  4. Enable developer options. Go to About phone and tap Build number seven times until you see the confirmation that you are a developer. This ensures system permissions are prioritized during the data handoff.
  5. Configure USB preferences. Open Settings > System > Developer options and locate Default USB configuration. Select File Transfer to ensure the hardware is ready to mount as a data source upon cable connection.
  6. Establish the physical connection. Connect the USB-C cable to both devices. Observe the target phone for the system prompt to initiate data migration, then follow the on-screen prompts to begin the synchronization.
