How to Secure Your Android Wi-Fi Connection
Protect your Android device on public and private networks. Learn how to toggle Wi-Fi privacy settings, use randomized MAC addresses, and secure DNS.
- Enable Randomized MAC Addresses. Open Settings and tap Network & internet, then select Internet. Tap the gear icon next to your current Wi-Fi network and select Privacy. Choose Use randomized MAC to ensure your device uses a unique identifier for every network session, preventing persistent tracking.
- Configure Private DNS. Navigate to Settings > Network & internet > Private DNS. Select Private DNS provider hostname and enter a secure DNS address such as dns.google or 1dot1dot1dot1.cloudflare-dns.com. This encrypts your DNS queries, preventing service providers from monitoring the websites you visit.
- Disable Automatic Network Connection. Go to Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi. Tap Wi-Fi preferences and toggle off Connect to open networks. This prevents your device from blindly joining potentially malicious hotspots as you move.
- Remove Unused Known Networks. Within the Wi-Fi menu, tap Saved networks. Review the list for any old, public, or insecure networks you no longer use. Tap the network name and select Forget to prevent your device from automatically re-establishing a handshake with these endpoints.
- Utilize a VPN for Public Wi-Fi. Download a reputable VPN application from the Play Store. Ensure the Kill Switch feature is enabled within the VPN settings to block internet access if the tunnel drops. Always activate the VPN before connecting to any Wi-Fi network that you do not personally own.
