Free Up Storage Space on Android
Reclaim storage on your Android device. Clear cache, remove apps, delete files, and manage photos to free up space quickly.
- Check your current storage usage. Open Settings and tap Storage or Device Care (varies by manufacturer). You'll see a breakdown of used and available space, plus what's consuming the most storage. Identify which categories—apps, photos, videos, or cache—are taking up the most room.
- Clear app cache and temporary files. Open Settings > Apps (or Application Manager). Select an app you use regularly, then tap Storage > Clear Cache. This removes temporary files without deleting your app data or login credentials. Repeat for other heavy apps like Chrome, social media, and messaging apps. For a faster option, go to Settings > Storage > Cache Files and tap Delete to clear cache system-wide.
- Uninstall apps you no longer use. Open Settings > Apps or Google Play Store. In Settings, go to Apps and scroll through your installed apps. Press and hold any app you don't use, then select Uninstall. In Google Play Store, search for each app, open it, and tap Uninstall. Start with large apps or games to free up significant space quickly.
- Delete old photos and videos. Open Google Photos and tap Library. Select photos and videos you want to remove, then tap the delete icon (trash can). For permanently deleted items, open Google Photos > Trash folder and tap Empty trash if available. Alternatively, open your Files app, navigate to Pictures or Movies, and delete files directly. Consider moving photos to cloud storage like Google Drive or OneDrive before deleting.
- Enable automatic storage management. Open Settings > Storage > Smart Storage (Samsung) or Settings > Storage > Automatic cleanup. Toggle on to let Android delete unused files, old downloads, and temporary data automatically. This runs periodically without your intervention and frees up space over time.
- Move files to cloud storage or external SD card. If your device has an SD card slot, open your Files app, select photos, documents, or videos, and move them to the SD card. Alternatively, upload files to Google Drive, OneDrive, or another cloud service and delete local copies. Open the cloud app, tap Upload, select files, and confirm. Once verified they're backed up, delete the originals from your phone.
- Verify storage is now available. Return to Settings > Storage to confirm available space has increased. The storage gauge should show more green and less red. If storage is still critically low, repeat steps 2 through 4, focusing on the largest files and apps identified in your storage breakdown.
