How to Back Up Your Android Phone Before a Data Transfer
Secure your data before moving to a new device. Learn how to perform a full cloud and local backup of your Android phone in this technical guide.
- Initiate Google Cloud Backup. Open the Settings app and navigate to System > Backup. Ensure the 'Backup by Google One' toggle is set to On, then tap 'Back up now' to trigger an immediate cloud sync of your app data, call history, and device settings.
- Sync Photos and Videos. Open Google Photos, tap your profile icon, and select 'Photos settings'. Tap 'Backup' and confirm that the account listed is the one you intend to use on your new device, then verify that 'Backup' is toggled On.
- Secure Contacts and Calendar. Navigate to Settings > Passwords & accounts. Tap your Google account and ensure both 'Contacts' and 'Calendar' are toggled On to synchronize your data with your Google account servers.
- Export Authenticator Codes. If you use Google Authenticator, open the app, tap the hamburger menu, and select 'Transfer accounts' > 'Export accounts'. Select your accounts and follow the prompt to generate a QR code for your new device.
- Perform a Local File Backup. Connect your device to a computer via USB-C cable. Set the USB connection mode to 'File Transfer' in the notification shade, then manually copy the 'DCIM', 'Documents', and 'Download' folders to a secure directory on your desktop computer.
- Confirm Cloud Restoration Status. Log into your account via a web browser on a separate device and visit drive.google.com. Navigate to 'Storage' > 'Backups' to verify that the entry for your current phone reflects the correct date and time of your recent backup.
