How to Configure Gesture Navigation on Android

Replace the traditional three-button navigation bar with fluid gesture controls on your Android device to optimize screen space and interaction speed.

  1. Open system navigation settings. Open the Settings app on your device. Navigate to System and select Gestures to view your current navigation configuration.
  2. Enable gesture navigation. Select System navigation from the menu. Choose Gesture navigation to replace the three-button layout with a single indicator bar at the bottom of the display.
  3. Adjust gesture sensitivity. Tap the gear icon next to Gesture navigation. Slide the Back sensitivity bars to calibrate how far from the edge you must swipe to trigger a back action.
  4. Master primary gesture inputs. Swipe upward from the bottom edge to go Home, or swipe and hold to view Recent apps. Swipe inward from either the left or right side of the screen to perform the Back command.
  5. Test navigation functionality. Return to your home screen and cycle through three different applications. Ensure the Back gesture functions consistently without interfering with app-specific drawer menus.
